What would you do if life handed you the one thing you always wanted? Would you keep it? Even if you knew it wasn’t really yours?
Get those tissues ready because the A Light Between Oceans trailer, starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Rachel Weisz, is out on the interwebs and it’s only a small taste of what’s to come. The story, adapted from the bestselling novel by M.L. Stedman, is heartbreaking and now, with current off-screen couple, Fassbender and Vikander, at the helm, the movie promises to be even more of a romantic and crushing tale.
All three of the main actors have proven themselves in other roles: Michael Fassbender has succeeded in everything from comic book movies to period pieces to Quentin Tarantino; Alicia Vikander just turned out a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for The Danish Girl opposite Eddie Redmayne; and Weisz, who has the potential to be the real standout in this super-charged emotional drama, also has a largely impressive resume complete with a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award as well.
AFTER FOUR HARROWING YEARS ON THE WESTERN FRONT, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel.
Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby. Tom, who keeps meticulous records and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel insists the baby is a “gift from God,” and against Tom’s judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them. [Goodreads]
