Eating healthy is expensive in the United States, but… why?
Eating healthy is expensive! But when you live in America, eating healthy is expected. Those who don’t are ridiculed by the rest of us. These days, you better not be eating dairy… or gluten… or carbs, or sugar, or white flour, or…. The list of items we can’t eat is growing longer than the list of foods we can. How can we be regimented with our diet when healthy eating is so darn expensive?!
In the video below, Vox explains why consumers opt for less healthy choices when grocery shopping and, despite what you may think, it has nothing to do with discipline and everything to do with cost. Millions of Americans are facing diseases like diabetes and obesity because they just can’t afford nutritious and balanced meals. But don’t lose hope yet! There are programs that are making it easier for lower income households to gain access fresh produce without a high cost.
The American dinner plate is deficient in nutritious produce, and part of the problem is cost. Because diets low in fruits and vegetables have serious consequences, health advocates have tried to incentivizes Americans to choose apples over donuts for years but with little success.
