Azuma Makoto is a Japanese sculptor who often involves natural elements, such as flowers, plants, and trees, in his work. He gained international recognition for his large-scale installations that combine art and nature. In the works below, Makoto has frozen large flower bouquets and photographed the result. Makoto is known for his crazy floral art installations. One of his most famous works is “Exobiotanica,” in which he launched a bonsai tree and a bouquet of flowers into the stratosphere using a helium balloon. The project explored plants and flowers would react to extreme environments and create art that could only exist outside the earth’s atmosphere.
Azuma has also created several other large-scale installations, including “Iced Flowers,” which involved freezing flowers in ice blocks and placing them in various locations throughout the city of Tokyo, and “Greenhouse of Lovers,” which featured a greenhouse filled with 30,000 flowers and was created for the 2015 Milan Expo.
