  • The Fall of Gondolin by J.R.R. Tolkien

J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fall of Gondolin will be published as a stand-alone, illustrated novel, for the very first time!

The Fall of Gondolin will be published as an illustrated novel in August 2o18. Written by J.R.R. Tolkien, Gondolin was the first “real” story set in the mythical world of Middle Earth; although Tolkien would go on to write many stories about his mythical world to include The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings series.

The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series were the only books to be published during Tolkien’s lifetime. Tolkien’s son, Christopher, went on to edit and release other works such as The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. Gondolin has been published as a short story in The Silmarillion but this will be the first time it is published as its own novel.

The story centers around the rise and fall of the Elven city of Gondolin. Tolkien began writing the story while serving in the army and various sections reflect his experiences from World War I. The author planned to turn the story into a novel but did not complete the project before his death. At the age of 93, Christopher Tolkien is finishing what his father could not.
