Whatever happened to the 2013 10 Things I Hate About You sequel?!
If you were a 90s kid, you probably know all about the romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. It was a seminal movie that helped jump-start the careers of Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It also featured great character actors such as David Krumholtz and Allison Janney. With a script based on The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare (and a perfect 90s soundtrack), the movie was smart, fun, and worth watching again and again. There was really no need for a 10 Things I Hate About You sequel, but we almost got one anyway.
The 10 Things I Hate About You sequel starred Evan Rachel Wood and Thomas McDonnell as characters who are considering suicide when they meet. Little is known about the plot beyond that. Although filming started, it quickly stopped due to financial concerns. As a result, Evan Rachel Wood, who was pregnant during filming, had her child during the break.
It’s not clear why filming didn’t start up again. The initial break was not at all anticipated and when filming was ready to begin again, Evan Rachel Wood wanted to stay home with her newborn for a few months. It’s said that she agreed to come back, just not right away. But filming never began again — the new production company blamed Wood while she, and others, blamed the financial woes and original shut-down. Regardless, all that’s left of the 10 Things I Hate About You sequel are a few promotion images and the original movie trailer (and that’s probably for the best).
