Songwriter, a documentary that follows Ed Sheeran’s songwriting process for the album Divide releases on Apple Music, September 7th
In college I was surrounded by amazing songwriters, many who have gone on to write for very popular artists. I dabbled in the art-form but compared to the others, I was mediocre at best. These days, it’s rare to find a popular singer/songwriter that makes me feel the way I felt about my college friends. John Mayer is great; Alanis Morrisette and Tori Amos, while not as popular, have always been brilliant; and in more recent years, Ed Sheeran has made me fall in love with the craft all over again. Are these artists always my favorite artists? No. But there is something I find truly fascinating about their songwriting.
I stumbled onto the documentary Songwriter by accident. Being both a music and documentary nerd, you can only imagine my glee. This was everything I could want: a documentary about Ed Sheeran that specifically focuses on his songwriting process for the album Divide.
The documentary begins as Sheeran writes “Love Yourself”, a song he wrote on a tour bus, which Justin Bieber eventually made famous. The remainder of the documentary follows Sheeran as he carefully crafts songs that would eventually become the bulk of his most recent album. Divide has the common theme of family and it’s both fascinating and heartwarming to watch Sheeran and his team navigate the melodies, harmonies, production and lyrics in such a collaborative way. If you’re a fan of Ed Sheeran, the album Divide, or of songwriting in general, you should absolutely check out Murray Cumming’s documentary, Songwriter.
