Butterbeer is well-known all over the world thanks to a little franchise you might have heard of called Harry Potter. The drink is so popular that most fans credit author J.K. Rowling with its invention; in reality, Rowling had nothing to do with it. Butterbeer has been around for so long that the YouTube show How to Drink is making a recipe from the year 1588.

Ready to make this delicious Butterbeer concoction at home? Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3 pints -or- 1.5 liters Real Ale
  • 1 inch fresh grated ginger
  • half a teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 6 cloves
  • 1 cup -or- 225 grams demerara sugar
  • 5 egg yolks
  • 4 oz. -or- 100 grams of butter
