Watch as Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds realize the Wrexham Association Football Club just got promoted to the English Football League!
I don’t watch soccer/football unless I have a very good reason (it’s on at the bar, and there’s nothing else to watch; the guy I liked was really into it, etc., you know, the typical reasons). And, to be honest, it’s a bit like that with almost every sport, not just soccer. But I will watch a sports documentary movie or series… as often as possible. (Give me a 30 for 30 any day!) This is why I decided to binge Welcome to Wrexham after it dropped on Hulu. And now, the real-life Cinderella (or Ted Lasso?) team has done it: Wrexham has been promoted to the English Football League!
You may have noticed that I am a bit obsessed with Rob McElhenney’s work (and let’s face it, that Ryan Reynolds guy is doing pretty well too). I did not see Welcome to Wrexham as his follow-up to It’s Always Sunny and Mythic Quest, but I was delighted nonetheless! Wrexham brought together two of my favorite things to watch on TV: a sports docuseries and McElhenney. So, home run, right? RIGHT! At the end of season 1, it broke my heart that they didn’t get promoted, but that’s how real life is, and it’s clear their journey wasn’t over.
I can’t wait to see what the team does with this chance, but if you ask me, this is a great way to end the first part. Watch Paul Rudd’s recording of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, who are speechless, when Wrexham wins:
