This writing exercise asks you to describe what it would be like if you found Batman eating alone at your favorite lunch spot… in 30 minutes.
Imagine that you stopped in to your favorite local taco joint for lunch when you notice a celebrity sitting at the counter… is that? No. It couldn’t be, could it? Is that BATMAN?! It is! But why is Batman eating alone?
Take the next 30 minutes and use the image as your starting point – why is Batman eating alone? Does your character take the time to find out? Is it really the Batman or just a guy in a decent Halloween costume? All of the decisions are up to you.
There are only two rules you need to follow:
- You only have 30 minutes to write so once you start, make the most of your time. Write as much of the story as you can in the 30 minutes but if that’s not enough time, try and stick to a specific scene or conversation within your overall idea. If, magically, 30 minutes is too much time, edit what you’ve already written – use the entire time window to your advantage.
- You must use the image as your writing prompt – you cannot change the details of the image. The man/woman at the counter must at least be dressed as Batman if not Batman himself. If you’re not really into writing comic-books or fantastical stories, try and incorporate the character into your style as best as possible. Or, if you’re really feeling adventurous, try writing in a comic-book stye or a superhero-fantasy style; you might really enjoy it.
