You don’t necessarily need to come up with a plot for this writing exercise, instead, focus on character description and development. Take a good long look at the image below and all the detail involved. Look at all of the items around the room, how it is decorated, where it seems to be located and if it is standalone or part of a larger structure. Your focus, in this exercise, is to tell us about who inhabits that room.

Consider the character’s age, race, weight, sex, height, school focus or job, hobbies, activities, and more. Go even further and fill us in on the character’s eating habits and daily routines. What is their hygiene like and do they ever bring company into the space? All of this is up to you and your imagination. There are no wrong answers.

Set your timer for 30 minutes AFTER you finish taking a good long look at the image. The only rules are to stay within your time limit and you must fit your character to the room given, you cannot base the character’s space on a similar room. Who lives in that exact room?

Remember the rules:

  • you must use the image above
  • you must reveal as much as possible about the character
  • you must use the full 30 minutes

Get Ready… get set… GO!!!!
