From mile-high sandwiches to sky-high scandals, discover the juicy story behind Carnegie Deli’s dramatic downfall.
If you ever visit Madison Square Garden, you might spot a version of the iconic Carnegie Deli. But for those of us who lived in or visited New York City before 2016, the original Carnegie Deli was the spot for towering sandwiches and unforgettable cheesecake. Sadly, that legendary location shut its doors in 2016, leaving a hole in the hearts (and stomachs) of food lovers everywhere.
Back in my NYC days, the Carnegie Deli was a tour stop whenever friends or family came to town. Their mile-high pastrami sandwiches were famous nationwide, and their cheesecake was practically a rite of passage. So, when the deli announced its closure, I was devastated. It wasn’t just a restaurant—it was a landmark!
At first, the closure made no sense. Then the news dropped: the deli was illegally siphoning gas from a neighboring building. If it had been mishandled in any way, siphoning could’ve burned down the entire block. It makes sense that the doors never reopened.
But the drama didn’t stop there. Oh no. Behind those iconic walls was even more scandal than the tabloids could keep up with—affairs, theft, and enough intrigue to rival a soap opera. I had no idea how wild it was until I stumbled upon the video below.
