Bake Off: Classic Southern Caramel Cake


There is nothing that gets my mouth watering faster than a slice of ooey, gooey, caramel cake and this recipe from Grandbaby Cakes looks so tasty I want to reach right through the screen and pull it out.

Sadly, folks, I can’t bake!  (Someday, I’ll tell you the tale of how Costco and homemade sugar cookies helped me almost sent my mother to the hospital.)  So, I guess the next question is, who feels like baking me a cake?!

But this cake is not for the feint of heart, just check out the ingredients below:


  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature (try a quality butter like this or this)
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 cups sifted cake flour
  • 6 large eggs plus 2 egg yolks, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sour cream, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract

Caramel Icing:

  • 1 1/2 sticks butter
  • 2 (12 ounce) cans evaporated milk
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
