The Game Is Over: Farewell to Mythic Quest

You know that feeling when you finish the last episode of a season and you immediately go looking for news on the next one, only to find out there won’t be a next one? Yeah. That was me when I realized AppleTV+ had canceled one of my favorite series: Mythic Quest. Cue the tiny violin and the slow-motion montage of me rewatching “A Dark Quiet Death” while dramatically whispering, why?

Let’s get this straight—Mythic Quest wasn’t just another show in my queue. It was backed by a dream team of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia alums: Rob McElhenney, Megan Ganz, David Hornsby, and Charlie Day. That’s comedic gold right there. Every season was sharp, weird, surprisingly heartfelt, and most importantly, fun. No, it didn’t have the universal awards glow of Ted Lasso, but it didn’t need it. It had heart and vision. It had Brad and Poppy. And it had Ian’s overblown ego monologuing about genius while the world burned around him. And it had me curled up on the couch, loving every dysfunctional minute of it.

So now what? Apple has pulled the plug after season 4, and they didn’t even bother to give us closure. No series finale. No 2-hour send-off movie. Not even a teary goodbye letter in the end credits. Just poof—gone. Look, I get it. Not everything lasts forever. (Says the girl who still quotes Buffy like it’s 2003.) But at least pretend to care about my emotional stability, Apple.

Still, in the spirit of “making do,” I’ll do what I always do when a beloved show is prematurely ripped from my hands—I’ll follow my faves (here’s looking at you, Danny Pudi and Charlotte Nicado) into whatever strange, wonderful projects they land in next. And I’ll make Mythic Quest an annual binge tradition, right alongside Firefly, Pushing Daisies, and every other gone-too-soon gem I’ve adopted over the years.

But hey, there is a tiny glimmer of light in this heartbreak spiral: Apple just dropped a blooper reel spanning the seasons. It’s not the emotional resolution I was hoping for, but I’ll take what I can get. A laugh through the tears, as it were.

So grab your emotional support snack of choice, hit play on those outtakes, and join me in mourning the loss of one of the most unique comedies of the last few years. And maybe—just maybe—start a wildly unrealistic petition for that wrap-up movie. Stranger things have happened. (Looking at you, Veronica Mars.)

RIP Mythic Quest. You deserved better.
