A polarizing musical episode of Grey’s Anatomy flounders, but Sara Ramirez’s powerful rendition of “The Story” shines.
Hear me out: I love a good musical episode of television… notice I said good. Buffy’s “Once More, With Feeling” is the gold standard as far as I’m concerned, and it’s almost impossible to top. So when I saw that a scene in Grey’s Anatomy musical episode, “Song Beneath the Song,” is one of my favorites, you might assume I loved the whole episode. But you’d be wrong. I was NOT a fan of 95% of it. But. I’m a fan of Callie Torres (do newer Grey’s fans even know about that character?) and a massive fan of Sara Ramirez’s voice.
In “Song Beneath the Song,” after a tragic car accident that includes her partner Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), Callie sees the world as if living inside a musical. It’s a risky plot twist. It could have been great, but, in my opinion, it mostly fell flat—except for one brilliant, tear-jerking song.
Sara Ramirez and The Story
Enter “The Story” by Brandi Carlile, one of my favorite songs. This song has been covered a lot—often poorly—but not here. The performance was widely praised by both audiences and critics, who highlighted Ramirez’s powerful voice and emotional delivery as the standout moment in an otherwise divisive episode. Ramirez’s voice soars, giving it an emotional depth that’s otherwise missing from the rest of the episode.
It’s a scene that stands out in an otherwise forgettable musical experiment, where many of the other performances felt forced or lacked the emotional resonance needed to really connect with the audience. The episode struggled with uneven song choices and awkward storylines, making it feel disjointed and ridiculous. And if you’ve seen it, you know exactly what I mean.
