When I was a kid, my mom played Linda Ronstadt around the house—the singer became part of my everyday life for a while: folding laundry, cooking dinner, existing…. Then I grew up, found my own music, and slowly forgot about her.
But recently, for reasons I can’t explain, Linda Ronstadt started popping back up in my life. Mostly her song: “Long, Long Time.” If you’ve ever loved someone who was never going to love you back, this song still hits by the way.
I love Ronstadt’s original version. But I’ll admit something that feels a little bit like betrayal: I think I love Brandi Carlile’s cover even more.
