Wait, Zoey Deutch Can Sing? The Middle Aged Dad Jam Band Returns!

The last time I wrote about the Middle Aged Dad Jam Band, it was Tia Carrere covering Pat Benatar. Before that, Kristen Bell did a cover of Fiona Apple for wildfire relief. Now it’s Zoey Deutch singing “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.” Yes, the Dirty Dancing song. The song that makes every couple try the lift between Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, with predictably mixed results.

I’m a fairly new Zoey Deutch fan. I watched Voicemails for Isabelle on Netflix recently, and romcoms don’t always land for me, but that one did. It got me paying closer attention, and I realized I’ve actually liked a good number of her movies over the years, including Set It Up and Everybody Wants Some!! with Glen Powell.

Which is part of why I’m counting down to Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, the movie this video is technically promoting. David Wain directs, Ken Marino (The Residence) co-wrote it, and somewhere along the way, they decided the best way to sell a movie about a hall pass gone wrong was with a full-band cover of the song from Dirty Dancing. Sure. Why not.

I watched Dirty Dancing enough growing up that I can still quote most of it start to finish, so watching their performance of “Time of My Life” was pure joy. Deutch takes the lead and has real pipes for it. Ken Marino joins on vocals too, and he’s just as entertaining here as he always is — the man could read a grocery list, and I’d watch.

This also doubles as a tour promo. The Middle Aged Dad Jam Band has a run of July shows lined up, including a 25th-anniversary tribute to Wet Hot American Summer, which makes sense given the Wain/Marino connection.
