Ryan Gosling in space? Say less – Project Hail Mary is headed to the big screen. Watch the new trailer!

After devouring Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir a while back (you can read my full review here), I walked away with two very clear thoughts: 1) science fiction can be surprisingly emotional, and 2) I would watch the hell out of this as a movie. So imagine my giddy little book-loving heart when the adaptation actually became a reality. And then imagine that heart practically launching into orbit when they announced Ryan Gosling as the lead. Yes, please.

Now, if you’re one of the holdouts who hasn’t read Project Hail Mary, here’s the gist: Ryland Grace wakes up alone on a spaceship, with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. Slowly, it all comes back. He’s humanity’s last hope, sent on a desperate mission to save Earth from an extinction-level threat. No pressure. And just when things can’t get more intense, he discovers he’s not alone in the galaxy. Cue the alien contact, wild science, and surprisingly wholesome interstellar friendship.

The upcoming film adaptation, directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (the duo behind The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), promises to bring the perfect mix of humor, heart, and scientific nerdery. In addition to Gosling taking on the role of Ryland Grace, we’ve also got a solid cast joining the mission: Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung (Lost, Industry), not to mention The Bear breakout star Lionel Boyce. Oh, and for fans of the book: yes, Rocky (James Ortiz) will be there. How they’ll pull him off on screen remains to be seen, but I’m betting we’re in for something special.

Whether you’re a diehard Weir fan or you just want to watch Ryan Gosling float through space while solving astrophysics problems (relatable), this one’s worth getting excited about.
