Eleanor Dash really needs to stop going on vacation, because this time her relaxing Bahamas weekend starts with a body in her hotel room. Catherine Mack’s latest is witty, chaotic, very meta, and basically begging to be tossed into your beach bag.
I’m starting to think Eleanor Dash should stop going on vacation.
Maybe that’s unfair, because everyone deserves a relaxing getaway. But when your “vacations” keep turning into murder investigations, it might be time to consider a quiet weekend at home.
In This Weekend Doesn’t End Well for Anyone, Catherine Mack brings Eleanor back for the third book in The Vacation Mysteries series. This time, Eleanor is headed to an all-inclusive resort in the Bahamas for what should be a glamorous murder mystery writers’ conference. Sun, cocktails, professional networking, probably some mild literary jealousy. Normal author stuff.
Instead, she finds a body on the floor of her hotel room.
Because of course she does.
Everyone Here Is a Suspect (Including the Guests)
From there, the weekend spirals into exactly the kind of twisty, witty, self-aware mystery Catherine Mack does so well. Eleanor is surrounded by familiar faces, and honestly, nearly all of them seem capable of either being the target or committing the crime. There’s Oliver Forrest, her charming boyfriend, whose publishing career is looking shaky. Connor Smith, her bestselling-rom-com-author ex, has enough baggage to warrant extra fees at the airport. Harper, Eleanor’s sister, is bringing her own writing frustrations into an already tense situation. And then there are all the other mystery writers at the resort.
I’ll admit, I have a soft spot for cozy mysteries that know exactly what they are trying to do. This one is fast-paced and full of personality. The narration is snappy, with an energy that keeps the pages turning. Not to mention, the glamorous resort setting gives it a whole beach-read vibe.
There are also pop culture references everywhere, and while I know that can be a dividing line for some readers, I mostly had fun with them. The Euphoria “Is this f*cking play about us?” reference made me laugh out loud, which is not something every murder mystery manages to pull off. Points for that alone.
The Meta Layer Actually Earns Its Place
What Mack does especially well is make the story feel playful without losing the mystery entirely. The book is meta in a way that fits — so many of the characters are writers who understand how stories, clues, motives, and misdirection work. That adds a fun layer. Everyone knows the rules, which somehow makes everyone more suspicious.
That said, this third book feels more like a slight variation on the established series formula. If you’ve read the earlier books, you’ll probably recognize the rhythm pretty quickly: Eleanor tries to have a normal trip, disaster strikes, her personal drama gets tangled up with murder, and everyone becomes a suspect.
The formula is still fun, repetitive or not. But I did occasionally wish the book pushed itself into slightly fresher territory. A few moments felt a little forced, but overall, I had a good time.
Worth Tossing in Your Beach Bag
This Weekend Doesn’t End Well for Anyone is the kind of mystery meant to entertain you. It’s witty, glamorous, and just twisty enough to keep you engaged.
Would I recommend This Weekend Doesn’t End Well for Anyone? Yes, especially if you like cozy mysteries with a sharp voice, a meta storyline, and plenty of pop culture references.
Just maybe don’t invite Eleanor Dash on your next vacation.
