We Begin At The End by Chris Whitaker [Book Review]

Chris Whitaker does it again with We Begin At The End, a story that’s heart-wrenching and impossible to put down. From the unforgettable characters to the small-town setting that feels almost alive, this book hits every note perfectly. Whether you’re here for the mystery, the drama, or just a beautifully written story, Whitaker delivers all that and more. Read on to find out what the book is about and why I gave it four out of five stars.

Walk has never left the coastal California town where he grew up. He may have become the chief of police, but he’s still trying to heal the old wound of having given the testimony that sent his best friend, Vincent King, to prison decades before. Now, thirty years later, Vincent is being released.

Duchess is a thirteen-year-old self-proclaimed outlaw. Her mother, Star, grew up with Walk and Vincent. Walk is in overdrive trying to protect them, but Vincent and Star seem bent on sliding deeper into self-destruction. Star always burned bright, but recently that light has dimmed, leaving Duchess to parent not only her mother but her five-year-old brother. At school the other kids make fun of Duchess—her clothes are torn, her hair a mess. But let them throw their sticks, because she’ll throw stones. Rules are for other people. She’s just trying to survive and keep her family together.

A fortysomething-year-old sheriff and a thirteen-year-old girl may not seem to have a lot in common. But they both have come to expect that people will disappoint you, loved ones will leave you, and if you open your heart it will be broken. So when trouble arrives with Vincent King, Walk and Duchess find they will be unable to do anything but usher it in, arms wide closed. [Goodreads]

No one does small-town characters quite like Chris Whitaker. We Begin At The End is the second book I’ve read by the author (All the Colors of the Dark was the first!), and once again, he completely nails it. It’s a beautifully written mystery packed with unforgettable characters, perfectly placed twists, and a style that keeps me hooked every time.

The story revolves around Duchess Day Radley, a tough 13-year-old who calls herself an “outlaw,” and Walk, the town’s guilt-ridden sheriff. Both are grappling with the murder of Star Radley—Duchess’s troubled mother and Walk’s childhood friend. Star wasn’t perfect, not even close, but her death leaves a hole neither of them can ignore. As much as they try to move forward, they’re pulled back into Star’s life and the secrets her death uncovers.

Duchess is one of those characters you won’t forget—fierce, flawed, and heartbreakingly human. Walk is just as compelling with his quiet determination and heavy conscience. Their stories are woven together with such care that you feel every heartbreak, every small victory, and every hope they cling to.

This book isn’t just a mystery; it’s a gut-punch of a story about love, loss, and the weight of the past. Whitaker’s writing is stunning—he makes the town of Cape Haven and its people feel so real that you’re right there with them, tangled in their messy, beautiful lives.

We Begin At The End feels destined to become a modern classic. It’s one of those books that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page. If you haven’t read it yet, trust me—add it to your list. You won’t regret it!
