Merrily We Roll Along by Stephen Sondheim is coming back to Broadway! The revival stars Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez.
Merrily We Roll Along has an interesting backstory. The Stephen Sondheim musical, which premiered on Broadway in 1981, was expected to be a smash hit like Sondheim’s earlier works. That, however, was not the case. The musical closed after multiple previews and only 16 performances (with a cast that included Jason Alexander from Seinfeld and Giancarlo Esposito from The Mandalorian). But here’s a little-known fact about Sondheim: even his lesser musicals have a spark of brilliance.
Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along is about a group of friends and how their relationships grow over the span of 20 years. The original plot was difficult to follow, and the audience frequently confused characters with one another. However, Sondheim (music) and George Furth (book) encouraged others to adapt the original production over the years, and Sondheim even provided new songs along the way. Revised productions won awards in the United Kingdom and received critical acclaim in the United States. The musical, however, has never returned to Broadway… until now!
