The Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass Trailer Has Arrived, and I Have Questions

The trailer for Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass came out this week. I watched it. I have questions. Specifically: how is this a real movie, who greenlit it, and why does it look kind of great?

Here’s the setup. Gail Daughtry is a small-town Midwestern bride-to-be with one of those celebrity hall-pass agreements that couples joke about, because the odds of anyone actually cashing it in are essentially zero. Her fiancé cashes it in. She spirals. A psychic tells her the only way to save the relationship is to even the scales with her own celebrity encounter. Her pass? Jon Hamm.

So she goes to Hollywood to find him.

Zoey Deutch (Juror #2) plays Gail, Jon Hamm (Your Friends & Neighbors) plays himself, as does John Slattery (Vladimir). The supporting cast includes Miles Gutierrez-Riley (Off Campus), Ken Marino (The Residence), Ben Wang (Karate Kid: Legends), Joe Lo Truglio (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Kerri Kenney (The Four Seasons), Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!), Richard Kind (Only Murders in the Building), Michael Cassidy (Resident Alien), Fred Melamed (Barry), Michael Ian Black (Inside Amy Schumer), and Sabrina Impacciatore (The Paper). Also, Italian assassins. The movie has Italian assassins.

David Wain directed and co-wrote with Ken Marino. The movie premiered at Sundance in January, which I choose to interpret as a good sign.

What the trailer does well is sell the escalation. Gail arrives in Los Angeles with a mission, the situation immediately gets stranger than she planned, and the movie seems to understand that the joke isn’t just the premise — it’s how seriously everyone is treating it. That’s Wain’s whole thing, and it works here.

There’s also something underneath all the nonsense that’s worth noting. The premise is ridiculous, but the injury is real: someone you love did something careless and technically defensible, and now you’re the one left holding the damage. Gail’s quest is absurd. The impulse behind it isn’t.

Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is in theaters July 10. Watch the trailer:
