The Twister: Caught in the Storm on Netflix is one of the most intense documentaries I’ve watched in quite a while. I went in expecting a harrowing story, but nothing prepared me for the emotional weight of this film. Somehow, it managed to be more intense, more heartbreaking, and more heartwarming than any natural disaster blockbuster I’ve ever seen. (And trust me, that’s saying a lot—I love a good Spielberg-directed or produced disaster movie.)

I remember watching the news coverage back in 2011. I remember seeing the wreckage and hearing the reports about Joplin, Missouri, and feeling heartbroken for the people who had lost everything. But like so many of us, it was still a story that happened somewhere else. I don’t live in tornado country, so most of my understanding of twisters comes from media—news clips, Hollywood films, and now, this documentary.

It’s not about the storm, it’s about the people

Watching this film was the closest I’ve ever felt to being in the middle of one of those storms. Even knowing how it ended, even sitting in the safety of my own home, my heart was racing.
