Legends & Lattes: The Graphic Novel by Travis Baldree [Book Review]

I’ll admit, I came to Legends & Lattes late.

For a long time, people have described Travis Baldree’s cozy fantasy world the way you’d talk about a warm blanket, a favorite bakery, or a comforting TV show. Still, I hadn’t picked it up until now.

Legends & Lattes: The Graphic Novel was my first trip to Thune, and what a lovely way to be introduced.

An Orc Walks Into a Coffee Shop

The story is about Viv, an orc who has spent her life fighting, chasing bounties, and doing all the usual things you’d expect from a fantasy hero. But Viv is tired and wants a change. She dreams of opening a coffee shop instead of fighting.

There is just one small problem: nobody in Thune knows what coffee is.

But the story isn’t just about coffee. It’s also about what happens when someone chooses to become a new version of themselves.

The Bravest Thing She Does Is Put Down the Sword

Viv isn’t out to save the world. She just wants a life where she doesn’t always have to be on guard.

The graphic novel format is a natural fit here. The illustrations by Sarah Webb and Shanti Rittgers, based on Samuel Sattin’s script, make the coffee shop feel inviting and lived-in, bringing real warmth to the characters and the world around them. A good graphic novel adaptation should add something to the experience, and this one does.

This is definitely a low-stakes fantasy. It’s cozy, charming, and sweet.

But low stakes does not mean meaningless. If anything, Legends & Lattes is a reminder that ordinary life can be its own kind of magic. Building something with care matters. Feeding people matters. Making a place where others feel welcome matters.

A Peaceful Life Is Not Boring

There is also a lovely found-family thread running through the story. Viv begins with a business plan, but people show up. They help. And slowly, the coffee shop becomes more than a shop.

If I had one small hesitation, it’s that the story’s gentle tone may not work for everyone. Readers looking for a big, sweeping plot or constant tension might find it a little too gentle.

Legends & Lattes: The Graphic Novel is a warm, beautifully illustrated way to discover a world many readers already love. It’s high fantasy with a cozy heart, telling a story about second chances and the special people who help you become yourself.

Would I recommend it?

Yes. If you want a low-stakes fantasy about found family and fresh starts, this book is for you. It’s best enjoyed with a cup of coffee and a pastry.
