Someday: Spike Jonze and Pedro Pascal Deliver Apple’s Most Stunning Ad Yet

If you saw the 2018 Spike JonzeApple collab Welcome Home featuring FKA twigs (and honestly, if you haven’t, pause and go fix that), then the newest Jonze–Apple short Someday might give you a little déjà vu. That was definitely my first thought. But just because Someday feels familiar doesn’t mean it’s any less breathtaking. In fact, it might just be one of the most stunning ads you’ll watch this year.

Jonze is back in full force with his signature blend of surrealism and soul, once again focusing on a single character caught in the middle of a bad day. In Welcome Home, it was a gray apartment and a sense of isolation transformed by music and movement. In Someday, it’s Pedro Pascal wandering the cold, city streets, nursing a broken heart—though we never find out the exact reason why. It doesn’t matter. We feel it.

But then… the magic strikes. He pops in his Apple AirPods 4, activates the noise cancellation feature, and suddenly the world shifts. Cue the color, cue the choreography, cue the delightfully weird and wonderful Jonze aesthetic. And yes, Pedro even gets to interact with another version of himself—an echo of the FKA twigs moment that had all of us rewatching on loop back in 2018.

Is Someday a sequel to Welcome Home? Maybe. Maybe not. But it doesn’t really matter because both are stunning short films that transcend marketing and become their own little art pieces.
